Biography

Marc Richards is a partner with the law practice of Crowell & Moring LLP (formerly a shareholder with the intellectual property law firm of Brinks Gilson & Lione, which combined with Crowell & Moring in July 2021). He has been recognized in Illinois as Leading Lawyer since 2008 and a Super Lawyer since 2013 in the area of intellectual property law. He speaks frequently on issues relating to patent law. He is the author of a chapter entitled “Patenting Inventions” in an IICLE IP Handbook.

Mr. Richards counsels clients on all areas of intellectual property law with an emphasis on patent matters, including obtaining and enforcing patents and assisting clients in developing patent portfolios that align with business strategies. He works with clients in protecting their IP in diverse technologies including software, business methods, industrial chemicals and polymers. He currently serves as Chair of the Chemical, Energy & Agriculture Industry Group at Brinks. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Richards worked as an engineer in the oil refining and chemical process industry, and was a Licensed Professional Engineer. He received his B.S. Chemical Engineering from Washington University at St. Louis, an M.B.A. with honors from the University of Chicago, and his J.D. cum laude from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law.

Mr. Richards is a recognized leader in the field of Intellectual Property Law. He is former President (2020-2021) of the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago (IPLAC). He served on the Board of Directors of the PTAB Bar Association at its founding. He also served as Chair of the US National Group of AIPPI, a division of AIPLA, having previously served as Treasurer, Vice-Chair and on the Steering Committee of the US Group. For AIPPI, he served in 2011-2012 as International Chair of the Q217 Committee for Harmonization of Obviousness, and in 2016-2017 as International Chair of the Committee on Security Interests for IP. He was a founding member of the Richard Linn Inn of the American Inns of Court.
