Biography

Cheryl Milone Cowles is Chief IP Counsel for IPWe.

Ms. Milone Cowels is an IP visionary and the co-founder and principal of AnswersIP (2018-present), a firm that innovates how IP law is practiced. Her previous venture, Article One Partners (2006-2015), was named 2009 Startup of the Year and she was recognized as one of the Top 50 Most Innovative CEOs in the U.S. at a 2010 White House forum on improving government customer service. PBS.org described AOP as “revolutionary” and the company was featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CNBC, Reuters, and Bloomberg Businessweek. When it was acquired by ipCreate in 2015, AOP was the largest IP research community in the world, powered by more than 32,000 researchers in 170 countries.

As a patent attorney, Ms. Milone Cowles has advocated before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for more than two decades with AnswersIP (2018-present), Lee & Hayes (2015-2017), Darby & Darby (1997-2006), Rogers & Wells, now Clifford Chance (1995-1997), and Kenyon & Kenyon (1992-1995). She has helped build the IP portfolios of SME clients and Fortune 1000 companies including Amazon, A&P Technology, Microsoft, Amazon, Lucent Technologies, and a range of SMEs.

Ms. Milone Cowles is the primary inventor on three patents and nine patent applications in the electronic software area. She is a contributing inventor on a drug-coated stent, a cardiac medical device.

She is admitted in New York, is a registered patent practitioner (USPTO Reg. No. 43,480), and is a member of the Federal Bar Association.

Ms. Milone Cowles speaks at IP conferences, writes for leading IP publications, and appears on television as an IP analyst. She has been named one of the Top 300 World’s Leading IP Strategists by IAM Magazine 2011-present. Her first book, which will soon be published, is titled Intellectual Property Protect: Your Personal Playbook For Cost-Efficient IP Strategies (2021).
